Seamless gutter installation

New gutters made in one piece per run, so there are fewer joints to leak and the size fits the roof.

Seamless gutters are rolled out of aluminum coil on a machine at your house, cut to the exact length of each roof edge, and hung with hidden hangers. For Hagerstown-area homes with old sectional gutters that leak at every joint, rusted steel gutters, or gutters too small to keep up with the roof, new seamless gutters are usually the long-term answer.

Signs it's time to replace

  • Joints leaking along the whole run
  • Rust holes or splits in the metal
  • Sags you've re-hung more than once
  • Overflow in normal storms even when clear
  • Soft, stained fascia behind the gutter
  • A new roof or siding on the schedule

Picking a size

Five-inch K-style gutters with 2-by-3 downspouts are standard on most homes. Six-inch gutters with 3-by-4 downspouts carry noticeably more water and are a good fit for big roof planes, steep pitches, long runs and metal roofs, which shed water fast. If water pours off one corner where two roof slopes meet, more downspouts or a larger gutter there may solve it. Ask the installer to explain the size they recommend for each side of the house.

Older homes in the city

Many older buildings in Hagerstown are brick or local Stonehenge limestone, and several neighborhoods are historic districts, among them the Hagerstown, City Park, Oak Hill and Potomac-Broadway districts. Half-round gutters and round downspouts often suit those houses better than K-style. If the property is under local historic review, check with the city before changing the gutter style.

Gutter options

  • Aluminum, the usual seamless material, in many colors.
  • Heavier-gauge coil that resists denting from ladders and ice.
  • Half-round profiles for period homes.
  • Copper, long-lived and costly, for showpiece homes.

What goes into the price

  • Feet of gutter, corners and downspouts
  • Gutter size, profile and coil thickness
  • Tear-off and haul-away of the old gutters
  • Fascia repairs found during removal
  • Guards or heat cable added at the same time

Common questions

Are seamless gutters better than sectional gutters?

For most homes, yes. With joints only at corners and outlets, there are far fewer places to leak, and the runs are custom fit to the house.

Do 6-inch gutters look too big on a small house?

On a one-story ranch, 5-inch gutters usually look and work fine. Six-inch gutters make the most sense on larger, steeper or metal roofs.
